Media ethnicity case studies

Ethnicity is portrayed differently throughout the media, most ethnicity groups are shown badly which retaliates a bad reaction of the audience which is what the papers want. In newspaper articles the minority of ethnicity groups are portrayed as the majority, so when you read an article on terrorism etc the papers make it sound like its the whole religion that is the same. In this article the population of Syria are shown as all being terrorists; this is because the headlines describe them as 'crowds flock' which makes it sound like the whole population turned up to this sick event however there may have only been a handful of people as it is in a tiny room. The image shows young and old generations viewing the videos which can make us, the public, think that they enjoy the terrorism and killings because they are educating the younger generation on it all. They are described as 'Bloodthirsty' which can connote vampires, the are represented to go after innocent humans and enjoy all the war and fighting. However the Daily Mail haven't actually said how many people turned up to this event, they just described it as the whole of Syria. The mise-en-scene shows the typical clothing they are wearing which includes the head dresses which can cause a mis-representation of the ethnicity group.

The most popular video that was shown on a loop is the killing of Jordanian pilot Mu'ath al-Kassabeh who was burnt alive by ISIS earlier this year, the view the public gets from this is that they kill innocent people for no reason and the population of Syria believe in it, however there is no articles on the population disagreeing with ISIS because it won't create a reaction the newspapers want. The image underneath shows a few people at the 'cinema' watching the movies and there eyes are fixed onto the screens like they are actually interested and finding it entertaining. You can also see a young boy sat next to his mum watching the video which makes us question if all this fighting will end because they are educating the younger generation on what is happening now so they think its 'normal'. The people within the article are portrayed as dangerous and the article is supposed to make us all feel threatened as they don't point out this is the view of everyone who lives in Syria.

Media report

For my pre-production task I created two magazine covers, using the textual analysis I began my final products. I also considered the audience feedback I received from the questionnaire I produced on Survey Monkey.

Questionnaire.
I looked into what the audience prefer by carrying out audience research, I produced a questionnaire concerning the preferences of my target audience (18-25 years old) I chose this age range because my questionnaire shown me that this age range reads more magazines. 50% answered saying they only read magazines monthly; this influenced me to make my magazine brand a monthly issue because it’s more likely going to be bought and read. 90% of the people who answered were female which helped me decide on the type of magazine I was going to produce; I designed a fashion magazine because they are more popular. 55% of the people that answered my survey said they would only pay £1.00-£2.99 for a magazine so I priced my magazine at £2.99 so people would be able to afford it.

Textual Analysis.
For both of my magazine covers I looked at fashion I was inspired by big named fashion magazines such as vogue. I looked at the different techniques the editors of magazines use and tried to use them within my own covers. The colours the magazine uses can also influence an audience to feel a certain way. Colours like gold can give the magazine an expensive look and made it look sophisticated. However the use pink can make the magazine look girly and classy. The type of writing can also show the audience what the magazine is like, the use of slang and san serif font can make the magazine seem cheap and more like a gossip magazine because it is seen as being aimed at a younger age range or a lower social class. However the use of serif font and no slang makes the magazine seem more sophisticated and aimed at an older age range and a higher class.

Images/layout.
I looked at other fashion magazines, which used models looking directly into the camera as if they were dragging the audience into the magazine. Most of the time the model is placed in the center of the cover with all the cover lines around the image, for my magazine covers I used medium/close-ups of my model looking directly into the camera. The model is always wearing similar clothing to the theme of the magazine this is why one of my covers she is wearing a Santa hat for a Christmas themed cover however my second magazine is an autumn theme so we is wrapped up warm. I used a serif font to make my magazine look more sophisticated and expensive, and used colours such as gold to make it look expensive and keep on with the autumn theme. The cover lines link in with the theme of the magazine, for example on the Christmas themed cover the cover lines are about gift guides and perfect dresses for Christmas. The background of the magazine is white, this means the main image on the front will attract more attention because there will be nothing distracting on the cover.

Font and language.
I used a serif font to make the magazine seem more sophisticated. On my second magazine I used the colours red and green to fit in with the Christmas theme, the red is used on the masthead; which can connote love; this also makes it stand out more. I used formal language to show that it is aimed at a higher class, however the cover lines are not in full sentences and may include fashion jargon to pull in the target audience. The cover lines show that the magazine covers all types of fashion because they use the jargon in the cover lines to say what the articles will be about.

Conventions.
The colour gold is used on the first magazine cover to show expense and sophistication, however I used the colour red on the second cover to connote love and it also links with Christmas; as it is a Christmas themed issue. In the second cover she is wearing a Santa hat to represent that the issue was a Christmas special and so the target audience know what type of fashion tips to expect within the magazine. These conventions help grab the attention off the right audience, and give them an understanding of what is within the magazine. To make the magazine cover feel more real I added a barcode at the bottom, I didn’t make it to big but placed it in the bottom right corner so people would notice it. There is a dateline under the masthead; which tells the audience what issue it is and when the magazine was published, it also includes its price.

Production.

For my production I produced a 2 page spread from a fashion magazine, the article linked in with my pre-production because it was an article from my fashion magazine cover. After producing my preproduction and researching methods used within the magazine industry I had a better understanding of how to make my magazine appealing to my target audience.
The demographics of my target audience include;

Age: My target audience’s age is between 18-30 years old. I have made this apparent by using sophisticated language and a minimal use of photographs. Even though the use of sophisticated language is used I have made my article engaging and personal to women in this age group. I have used the ages 18-30 because at this age they are working and having their own money to spend on clothing etc.

Socioeconomic class: My magazine is aimed at more D’s, C’s and maybe B’s. These classes are working either with low paid jobs or well-paid jobs so will be earning their own money to spend. This even includes students; which means these classes will be able to afford the magazine and clothing etc from the magazine.

Gender: The magazine is aimed at females, it appeals to females because it is all about the latest fashion for women. It also uses well known celebrity’s throughout the magazine (celebrity endorsement) which can persuade the target audience to buy the magazine more because they will have the idea that wearing similar clothing to their idols makes them a lot closer and they will look like them.

The objective to my magazine/ magazine article was to use stories that women in the age group 18-30 want to read about and find interesting so they will buy the magazine. The headlines used makes the audience want to buy the article to find out more and what it is all about, at the end of the articles it also includes the website address which publicise the brand even more which can lead to people wanting to buy the magazine more. When researching other two-page spreads I recognised the layouts where all similar however extremely creative.

This two-page spread is also from another fashion magazine, for the background they used 2 colours; which link in with the whole concept of the article. Its target audience is also aimed at a similar age and the use of cartoon makes it very effective. My two-page spread doesn’t include as much writing however the images make it stand out. This magazine has included photos from a catwalk which include the colours black and white which the article is all about, however in my two-page spread I didn’t consider a colour theme or the use of images very well which may have let the article down slightly.     However the strengths in my article would be that the article itself was thought out clearly and I experimented a lot with different layouts.
